What is keyword research? Why did you take so long to write another piece? what is this Ticabo site anyway? like i said to some one not all mysteries can be revealed, but in this article i will endeavor to unravel the “obtuse” science of performing key word research, now i would prefer to actually be do some keyword research (for a exhorbitant fee) than be writing about it, bt i love writing so here i go.

A prospective client asked me an interesting question, he asked if i could find out the best key words to rank highly for a product (let say you sell financial derivatives) so what kind of keyword phrases would rank for a website that sells financial derivatives information to people that want to buy it, now this kind of open ended question is a great way to start. You can start up by basically creating the keywords and phrases and then testing to see whether these terms are being searched for. Is the key word even important enough to build a site for? yes , right now it is; with bonds, options, calls, puts, futures, credit default swaps and forwards.

The Importance Of A Googler

So how would i recommend you start creating a batch of keywords to test? First off, who needs information on financial derivatives the most, first off; the people (some are suckers) who bought them, banks, mutual funds, hedge funds and corporations who are more concerned with financial engineering. But most of these organizations have their own research sections (hopefully) but there are tons of “sophisticated” individual investors who need this kind of information, and right now there is not a lot of information on these things for sophisticated investors.

Next thing to do is Google key words , while creating them on the fly. For these you need a “googler”, some one who searches for arcane and unseen things on the internet , and finds it! nowadays it is hard to get good information on any thing, you search for “financial derivatives” and up comes a wiki page! i mean. If i wanted a wiki page i would just go to wikipedia. But hey, i have to find this information , so i create different kinds of key words for “options” “stock options” “stock options news” “stock options analysis” until i find out one site that keeps popping up consistently for all or majority of my terms, i may do 30 - 50 keyword combination’s, may be even a hundred, looking through each listing. with this you can find 8-10 websites that consistently rank.

Reverse Engineering

Now once you have found these sites you research them, desicover how many key words they have, examine the anchor text’s used to describe these back links, this can be done by simply using Yahoo and Google site explorer tools (free and accessible from the tool bar) Another tool that is great is http://www.submitexpress.com/analyzer/ , and www.alexa.com, using these two website you can generate tons of raw data which you can analyze. These tools will enable you to gather data on these sites, and also give you an idea on how many people visit the site and who they are.

Quantcast And Google Adwords Analysis Tool

Quantcast is a great way to analyze your competitions site, if your competition is irrelevant it will not show up! If you have access to the site you can add the Javascript to analyze the site , another tool can be found here at a Google page. These two tools i find invaluable in competitive research.

What is an Aside (i dunno) . Why did facebook redesign ( i know the answer to that), every body seems to hate the new design (is it really new, the old one is just a few months old) , any way facebook redesigned for a really simple reason, they wanted to increase their ad space, lets take a look at the new design

I deliberately left the image at full size so that you can immediately notice the large amount of space ads are occupying, also note that the very first thing on the right hand corner are ads (after some blurb like thingie showing you a few notifications, wham! they hit you with the ads) This seems like a small difference when you consider all the beef people have against the new design but take a look at the last design generation

Can you see the difference on the top right corner, its filled with “you” stuff , and no commercial stuff, just a lot of notifications, big differences in design for a single purpose, increasing ad space, increase ad space AND ad prominence, reduce ad blindness (tendency of people to overlook ads) call ads highlights and (hopefully) increase revenue.

What People Forget

Facebook is a business, not a good will organization. They are hosting all this great stuff (and generate lots of cyber buzz) but they hardly make any money, this is a problem most user generated content web sites face, which is why wikipedia is spending time asking (begging?) people for money, and Digg is still not profitable (and is rapidly being controlled by a bunch of tyranical users). Facebook needs to generate income one way or another, and we do not know how much they make right now (since its a privately held company) but they are definitely trying to increase their revenue, their methods should be closely noted, since all companies that hope to ape that model can benefit from it.

RIA? AIR? I think you have a typo in your definition. No, thanks, I don’t. Okay, let’s backup a little.

AIR is the code name for a cross-operating system runtime being developed by Adobe that allows developers to leverage their existing web development skills (Flash, Flex, HTML, JavaScript, Ajax) to build and deploy rich Internet applications (RIA) to the desktop. Thus, it allows web developers to work with the development tools of their choice and the approaches they find most comfortable to build web content and AIR applications.

Originally called Apollo, Adobe AIR has been increasing its utility since it was released in beta back in 2007, and now anyone with even a little knowledge of programming and a little patience can create Adobe AIR Rich Internet Applications (RIA).

The AIR runtime bridges the Web-based user experience and the rich, highly sophisticated user experience in modern desktop-applications. AIR applications can operate offline and can take advantage of additional functionality when connected to the Internet. These applications run on the AIR runtime, and it is delivered to end-users in single packages (file extension .air) rendered using the WebKit HTML engine.

As at January 2009, there were at least 100 million people infected for good with Adoberia (this was a count of successful initial installations, and so installations that were successful after the initial attempt have not been included in the statistics). One of the reasons for this very fast growth is the seamless way the AIR install badge detects the presence of the AIR runtime. If present, the AIR application is installed, but if absent, the runtime is installed first of all (it’s a one-time installation). This initial runtime download provides Adobe with such statistics as are presented above.

Okay, how can I catch the Adoberia? We have talked about a lot of methods to use to generate links, including directory submissions, blog back links, reciprocal linking, link spamming and blog commenting, this may be the last article on linking for this “period” by period i mean any thing between a week to two months, it is time we move on to more exciting topics, plus i cant think of any linking ideas right now, so here are some of the basic building blocks for a link building campaign

Key Word Research

This should be done to determine what kind of anchor texts you should use, you can do key word research either by analyzing your site or analyzing your competitions site, also you can predetermine what key words you want to compete for, when picking key words there are two basic kinds, the first and most common strategy for picking key words is focusing on the top 10-20 keywords for marketing your site. The “top keyword” concept is reinforced by SEO agencies that contract to gain rankings for 10-20 terms, maybe 30. However, those that focus on the top 10-20 terms may be missing the majority of their market, the millions of people who search for countless variations of several basic key words, so great is the opportunity here that it is believed that 70 percent of all possible key word combination’s have not yet been optimized for.

Long Tail Keywords

The strategy used for optimizing for these key words is the long tail technique , In the world of the web, where minute details are tracked, traffic is not won in the top ten terms, business is made in the “bottom hundred thousand” terms, The groups of terms that may only result in a single visit, but number in the thousands. These are the dozens of market segments that search for specific needs, specific requirements and detailed terms. Chris Anderson wrote a little book about it that you can get at Amazon, its called “the long tail”, he also has a blog on it here.

Chris Anderson also trademarked the term “the long tail”, which i think is pretty brilliant but is not what we are talking about.

Basically the terms that bring in the most traffic are the long tail terms (i hope Mr Anderson does not sue me for the indiscriminate use of his term) and you should use these terms as anchor texts on your links.

Twitter! O Twitter

Use Twitter to build links, An article about Eric Ward described how he obtained a high authourity back link via his Twitter connections, according to him

“A few weeks ago I announced a new site via URLwire, and whenever I do this I set up several alerts/trackers to see where mentions/links show up. I also set up a Twitter search for that new URL….the new site I announced has been tweeted or re-tweeted by seven people…I discovered all of them were health experts in one form or another. Also, all of them had several hundred followers (one had 780), and a quick check of a few dozen of those showed some overlap (expected) as well as frequent health URL tweets. In other words, I’d found a loose community of several thousand collective Twitterer’s who had shared news about a new web site URL.

One of those re-tweets came from a librarian at a med school web site, who did one more thing with that URL. She added a link to it from the med school web site she’s in charge of editing. What started to her as a tweet ended as a permanent link from her high trust web page.”

What’s a “Click Heatmap”?

A click heatmap is a visual piece of data that shows where viewers are clicking on your website — and as the title suggests, shows more ‘heat’ in areas that are clicked more.

They’re useful for many reasons, some of which include:

Knowing exactly how a viewers uses a specific page.
Seeing which parts of a page are unused.
Seeing parts of a page that are most used.
Understanding patterns of use on your site as a whole.
Predicting how visitors will use your site in the future.
Using that insight to better cater to your viewers.

VIDEOS AND ARTICLES

Make a video or get your merchant to send you a video that you can post to video sites. Make sure you link them back to your landing page, or article site or to the merchants page. This can also be considered a social media optimization method, you can then use this tool to see how well your linking program is going, You can also write articles and submit them to article directories, this will generate back links back to your site, your key word research will be extremely important in this segment too as it will determine the theme of your articles, which will help when people are searching for articles to add to their sites, i will probably be writing on key words in my next few pieces, hopefully focusing on anchor text (which is still under linking in a backhanded sort of way).

Behold The Dark Side

Ok, we are going to go continue with the “other” methods,again we will continue with automated means of spamming, i am basically going to describe as many as i can and post as many links as i can to pieces of code, if the code is not available i wont describe the functionality (hey, no harm in posting links right)If you get black listed by a spam organization while using these pieces of code, well …you should have read the disclamer.

Automated Comment Spamming

The first piece of code is from this fellow here that “collects” links, he is like a link enthusiast, occasionally he blogs about his hobby, this particular app of his does the following

“A - look for WP blogs in Yahoo
B - post a comment

A) The script has a basic list of 100 most popular words in English language. It takes 2 random words, then queries Yahoo for WP blogs containing those words.
B) Every post on WP has an ID. We don’t really wanna be bothered with extracting it… we just take a random number between 10 and 30, and try to comment on post with that ID.”

I believe the script can be edited to work with Google search results, but mess with Google at your Peril Matt Cutt’s will find you. In case you missed the code is here (like there).

This One is Legit

Okay this piece is automated, it is similar to sharethis; its an automated submission method, i should not be sharing it under link spamming techniques, it should be under social media optimization; this piece of software is called socializer, and instead of “digging” it or sending it to stumbleupon, you can send your post link to ALL social bookmarking sites with one click, if you use word press, they have a word press plug on their website , the code and instructions for this automated link spawner can all be found at the website. Note: you do have to be logged in to all the sites to send the link, if you have a great piece you are writing about you could get a lot of buzz. But basically it is a legitimate method (so no spamming here).

Hack It Already !!

When in doubt , go online and hack the web site you want to put links on. Hey you can even do it like those mad hackers and put your signature on it. If you cant do it, eh, hire a hacker (they are for hire) buy a script that uses exploit, heck some of these scripts are free for download, make sure your anti virus is up to date though, before they introduce you to conficker, however there are tons of perfectly clean sites that offer all sort of nightmarish packages, online pharmacies and pr0n sites are already aware of all these packages and methods, but we as honest working blokes must keep it in mind and protect our websites frm all these tools, and just keep the information in case we need to use it our selves. You should be able to find these sites when you Google “Blackhat SEO” and follow those sites.

Enough Already

If you want automated comment spamming software, there are tons of them out there and i will not introduce you to them all, since this is not purely a black hat site and i do not want it to be viewed as such, yo can just Google “black hat seo” and register for the “other” side, or the “dark” side. I believe these article’s are enough to get you started on linking techniques, i will probably have may be one or two more articles on linking techniques, probably more arduous and definitely safer from Google’s Web Spam department.

The “Other” Method

Just in case you are a total Noob to Search Engine Optimization and you are just doing this SEO stuff because you don’t want to pony up several grand to some one that knows what he/she/it is doing, i will say the following despite the disclaimer which will inevitably follow this article, some of what i am going to talk about right now is unethical and can get you penalized by search engines, spamhaus/spamcop (non profit anti spam organizations) and angry webmasters, most of this techniques are used by the “dark side”, i mean casino’s, “pr0n” sites and online pharmacies.

How ever if you succeed with the following techniques and you are not caught you will shoot up immediately to the top of the rankings for the key words you are optimizing for, and i mean immediately, they are easier than the arduous methods i recommend and cost little or no money. I have never done these techniques for any of my customers (and if the ask i probably wont do it any way) however we are all learning here so let me introduce you to link spamming techniques.

Link Dumping

Link Dumping: Link Dumping is the Black Hat art of dropping a link to your sites everywhere that is humanly possible for little to no money. Common link dumps include guest books, comment sections, and link exchanges. the most common method for this is easy you just do a search for blogs on wordpress.com that allow comments and you comment on every single one of them, stuffing your keywords into the comment and (of course) your URL. Now you know why you always get those kind of links, These guys are trying to do the same thing you are trying to do, game the search engines! These guys are on the prowl for the guy that left his comments “unmoderated” or even worse is just asleep on the job, spammers do so much volume that inevitably like half their links are left live, the solution is to moderate properly and to use the delink comment if you are a laissez faire web master, this seems strict but if you generate a lot of links this is the only way (see Youtube) The other solution looks easy right, just stick the nofollow tag on all comment links automatically and they are wasting their time.

The Big Secret

However the nofollow tag does not work properly, the back link does not reflect if you do a search but Google still counts the link as a vote, so you are giving the spammer some link juice. Yes you heard me right, nofollow does not work properly (sorry Wikipedia) however its hard to spam wiki because of the draconian editors who really run the entire show, so if the link is irrelevant it will be deleted, however if you can write some neat content which is sourced from your site then wiki works pretty good as an authourity site (this is despite the fact that they use no follow so its not supposed to count) but the search engines make up their own rules any way so they break the HTML protocols if the want. Now these methods are all really methods that are really easy plus they are simple so before i go check up a few friends and play frisbee, here is an automated method you could start using tonight.

Link Spamming Using Referals

Referral spamming is the action of sending multiple requests to a web site with a “referral url” that you want to promote . Then, you want either a webmaster to be curious about who is sending them traffic and visit the site by inspecting the logs, or (more often) you want the websites referral logs to be published (thereby creating free backlinks). The great thing about comment referral spam is that it is automated, manual methods are great to get around Captcha’s, but robots are just flummoxed by that gif thinkamajig, so you use comment referal spam, and you can get the code for a bot that does that here at destons blog, The code works best when the website make their logs public (they are not a lot but hey, its automated, let the script run and go to sleep). Okay i am off to get things done, hopefully i will continue posting on link spamming techniques later this evening.

Why is he still talking about linking? Ok, maybe you didn’t ask, but let me humor myself, its April fools day, i have no April fools jokes, deal with it…

Why am i still talking about linking, i believe SEO is basically in two sections, link trading and web copy writing. I am very good at web copy writing, I can see that you are surprised, you wouldn’t have believed it unless i told you, right? Linking, however, I find hard. I find linking difficult, i am always looking for ways to make my linking easier, if there was one thing that would make me quit SEO, it would be linking( hence i am writing about it.)

Directory Submissions

What kind of linking am i talking about? It’s the kind that you get one link, one way from one site (said site being a web directory). There are quite a few web directories online, this is quite fortunate for people looking for links, a lot of them are free, you get these links by submitting your URL to said directories, these directories will almost always accept your link after some time if you have some content on your site. Once you have filled their application form, all you have to do is wait; waiting is the easy part.

Basically i endeavor to let a colleague of mine do all the linking work when we are given a project, i just e-mail him, “Dave i need links for www.whateversite_iamworking_on.com”. Dave (I hope i am making him famous) delivers, but you see Dave doesn’t just deliver, Dave delivers big! I am talking 1000 one-way-back-links-in-a-few-months-deliver. Dave team is patient, because i was climbing up walls the last two times i delivered 150 back-links a month , i was looking for the nearest directory submission service, it was physically painful. There, now if you do not have Dave around you and what i just said does not sound like what you want to go through. Just go, here , here and here. there you have some directory submission sites, and they charge way less than i do.

Automated Submission Services

In my place of pain, while linking, I started searching for automated submission services. No luck, they just auto fill the tabs, and guess what? Sometimes they fill it wrong, and they never fill the CAPTCHA. Sometimes whoever designs the directory website does not design the form fields properly, so the name field looks like URL field and optional phone number field looks like email address. Its almost impossible for these automated submission packages to get any thing right! Try www.submithelper.com to see how it works.

Which Is Which

Another problem is that when you start looking for a listing of directories you get a whole bunch of them, A great list is this one here at one way links, they have like one thousand two hundred links, and you can just sit on the site and fill up all the fields, just use auto-fill after like the 20th form instead of picking up a submission software (or even worse, paying for it).

Now what will be your success rate? I can guarantee you that it will be inversely proportional to the the page rank of the directory, a lot of 0 page rank (probably all) directories will link to you , and almost 75 percent of the pagerank 1-4 directories will accept your URL, another 25 percent of 4-6, by the time you get to 7 , maybe one out of every 50 , PR9, you better have really good content, and even then.

The downside about free sites is that everybody knows about them, and so every body that desires to optimize in one form or the other applies, and since its free they have a lot of back log, approval can take a very long time, sometimes they may not get to you for several months. Free directory submission is best done in a fatalistic manner, you get some runs , you get some strikes!

That said you can just go and pay for a directory link, several lists for paid directories can be found here, here and here, note that Yahoo charges 299 dollars for a directory listing. Maybe i need to upgrade myself, that sounds rather high, and i consider my self an extravagant fellow. How ever these links are good if they are old and recognized.

Directory submissions are the bread and butter of any linking campaign, you get one way links and your only limit (like any other linking project) is the amount of time you are willing to invest in it. Any website that has a theme: even an e-commerce site or a search engine, will get accepted into directories. Content that you add can be products, new applications, whatever. Basically, any site that performs a function will get accepted on a directory.

There are various other ways to generate one way back links to your web site, and I intend to write about linking until i exhaust most of them.

Link Building On Steroids

Why write about links? Why bother!! What does this have to do with Organic SEO any way? Some people say link building reciprocally can be a waste of time, with few responses to your offers. and the responders probably have too many links already on their site to give you any Page Rank Juice any way.

So what do you do if you cannot find any success in reciprocal links, you think its a middle aged bartering system that has no place in the modern world, your emails go unanswered, or even worse your users jump ship to the other fellows web site, perhaps its like this one and is extremely interesting, and yours is cookie cutter and “mundane” (ok, ok thats a joke), how do you still get relevant back links that will increase your Google rankings. How do you not only increase your Google rankings via Pagerank vote’s but beat your competition for the key words you are optimizing for. There are several ways to go about generating links for the minimum amount of expenditure.

In any thing you do, be prepared to see it to the end, creating any good thing is arduous and will take some time. Ivan over at Seochat has written a series of articles that come close to what real world optimization is like. The first thing is to compensate for your lack of good links by writing good, no, not good, exceptional content. In any way possible obtain content. Content that is relevant, redesign your site and make it look good, pay the graphics designer and the flash creator, once you have pimped out your web site, you go networking, what you need are authority links. You now replace quantity with quality, quality sites are not going to link to you because you asked, and you definitely wont get away with offering them 5-25 USD, the only way a quality site will link to you is if (one) they like you. (two) they like your site.

Linking With Authority

Authority sites are sites which are regarded by Google as leaders or “authorities” on a particular topic or theme, they focus on a single theme and are widely referenced, you want to become the authority site, but for now you are just on par with a good looking PR1 site, it is better if your site focuses on one theme, then you can be given search engine rankings based on Google’s Topic Sensitive Trust Rank and Topic Sensitive Page Rank. More likely than not you will either find individuals who will spend majority of their advertising budget on a pay per click program, today however we will not talk about the “heaves and rolls” of Pay per click, today i want to write (and hopefully have you respond) about generating back links, there are tons of ways to generate back links and companies like text link ads pay per post and other much maligned agencies are currently creating a whole new business model based on generating back links for websites, we also have the automated spamming techniques popularized by online pharmacies and pornography websites (you can also blame the Russians) and of course good old directory submissions.

How ever you (the website owner) can use blog networks like pay per post, bloggertizer, Smorty, Snapbomb and all the other shameless “pay for your back link” hucksters to generate tons of free back link’s, and if its not free it should be much cheaper. Plus this way it will be ensured that the links will be from relevant websites and not from “topsmortyuser10″ who writes and links to websites ranging from online casino’s to pharmacies. So how do you generate the free links? You follow, I lead.

The Proposal

Getting links is like dating: if you meet a needy person, they will probably say yes. Websites and blogs that join blog networks are needy, the owners want money primarily and then they want visibility for their websites/blogs. The first thing you need is a blog roll. Ideally on your front page. It can be stuck to the bottom of your page, it does not matter as long as you have one, you then search the databases of these blog networks, and you simply ask for a reciprocal link, a short note stating “Hello, I would like you to link to (place URL here) on your blog roll, I have already added your URL to my own blogroll. In the case that you have a blog on the network that refuses to reciprocate or you don’t have a blog roll, and you believe the blog is worth the money, you can still ask for a back link in return for cash payments, offer between 4-15 dollars for a permanent back link, this is way cheaper than the blog network’s payment system, at least 50 percent cheaper, of course this method has a downside.

If Time is Money, You Can’t Use These Methods

These methods take time. For maybe 500 blog links you may spend 70 - 120 man-hours, this is why a lot of people that want to use these methods simply hire some one else to do this job or actually use a blog networks. Instead of the drudgery of emailing, researching key words and then making offers, you can simply spend most of your budget on paid links.

How ever if you have the man power and the time to perform these operations, you will develop an SEO campaign that will develop your Page Rank and increase your rankings on specific keywords, which in turn will bring in more traffic.

That’s Web Sense Over Money!

If you go online and google “back links”, you will get tons of people claiming to have the “secret” to generating back links, all kinds of services and web applications and websites that try and sell you some program or book or newsletter (some of them on those funny little web pages with the testimonials in italics, all asking to part with a part of your advertising budget), frankly that is a waste of time, there are no quick fixes! Generating links takes time, research, and effort. And if you have less money than sense, you will have no choice but to do the work required to generate the back links.
